ABOUT LIFE ACADEMY Life Academy of Health and Bioscience (Life), a new
autonomous public
schoolin East Oakland with a health and bioscience focus, supports a healthy,engaged,
and enthusiastic 250 students grades 9-12. A trailblazer of a trendto
make Oakland Public Schools smaller, more efficient and more focused,Life
Academys teachers and staff are committed to provide an up-close and personal
education of the hearts and minds of this diverse cross-section
of Oakland youth. Since our beginning in the 2001-2002 academic year,
attendance has increased dramatically and students attitudes reflect their
feeling of safety and community.
WE WANT TO MAKE A GOOD THING BETTER!
Students want and need to read. We have begun combating low reading skills
with a mandatory 40-minute silent reading period held twice weekly. Studies
have shown that reading regularly contributes greatly to increases in
literacy, comprehension, vocabulary acquisition and written expression.
We need books! We need engaging books that will encourage our students
to read
for pleasure and as a supplement to the curriculum. Our current selectionof
books is very sparse, consisting mainly of books that teachers have brought
from home.
Our goal is to establish a library that meets the needs of the students
by offering a wide variety of books of all genres, both classic and contemporary,
English and Spanish. Life Academy is a public school, and all donations
are tax-deductible. This is our plea to businesses and private individuals
to donate books (but request that no textbooks be donated) or make monetary
contributions in order to help Life Academy successfully achieve our goal
of creating an effective library for our students.
We are more than grateful to receive all books that can be donated, however,
attached is a list of courses offered and a preferred book list, prepared
by the teachers at Life Academy.
