THURSDAY LUNCHEON SPEAKER
Kevin McCormack is the Communication’s Director at the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. CIRM is California’s stem cell agency and its mission is to accelerate stem cell treatments to patients with unmet medical needs. It was created by the voters of California in 2001 and given $3 billion to fund stem cell research in California. To date, CIRM has funded 33 different clinical trials, where treatments are being used to help people battling life-threatening problems; everything from heart disease and stroke, to cancer, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injury and diabetes. It has helped develop a cure for diseases that in the past would be fatal to young children born without a functioning immune system. It also is helping to develop treatments for other deadly diseases.
