It was created by the voters of California in 2001 and given $3 billion to fund stem cell research in California. To date, CIRM has funded 33 different clinical trials, where treatments are being used to help people battling life-threatening problems; everything from heart disease and stroke, to cancer, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injury and diabetes.
