David Lei, The Chinese Exclusion Act
THURSDAY LUNCHEON SPEAKER
David Lei, Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) Board Member and Community Advocate, will talk to us about the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the subject of a recent documentary by Ric Burns and Li-Shin Yu. This Act was the first significant law that restricted immigration into the United States of an ethnic working group. Its place in American history is profound and relevant, particularly given the current national dialogue on immigration. Lei owned a successful export business from 1981 to 2003 and retired in 2005. David has a passion for community building, social changes/improvements, youth education and the arts and actively participates with a number of organizations that support these areas, including CAAM. David attended public schools in San Francisco and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Business Administration.
