Hike with the President

Sunday, April 7th, 2019 - 8:30am to 11:30am

Join President Gudrun and Robert Kidd on the “Hike with the President” to the “Little Yosemite Area” of Sunol Regional Wilderness, the southern-most “wilderness” of Alameda County. The scenic gorge features small waterfalls and unique boulders. After recent rains, Alameda Creek will be running full, and the hills will be verdant green.  Rotary fellowship on the trail: always good.

Where to meet:            Meet at the footbridge, adjacent to the first parking lot in the park.

Directions:

GPS --                         For those of you on GPS, the park HQ is 1895 Geary Road, Sunol.

From Oaklnad Take I-580 over Dublin grade to I-680, or take Highway 24 through the Caldecott Tunnel to I-680; Take I-680 south; Continue on I-680, past both the “Sunol Blvd.” exit and the “Sunol” exit; Exit at I-680 Exit 22 (Calaveras Road/Highway 84);  At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Calaveras Road; Proceed 4 miles along the charming country lane of Calaveras Road;Turn left onto Geary Road (look for the Sunol-Ohlone Wilderness sign); Geary Road leads to the kiosk at the park entrance.

From Walnut Creek --          Take I-680 south; Continue on I-680, past both the “Sunol Blvd.” exit and the “Sunol; Exit at I-680 Exit 22 (Calaveras Road/Highway 84); At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Calaveras Road; Proceed 4 miles along the charming country lane of Calaveras Road; Turn left onto Geary Road (look for the Sunol-Ohlone Wilderness sign); Geary Road leads to the kiosk at the park entrance.

How long:                   Sunol Regional Wilderness is about 45 minutes from Oakland.  The hike “out” to the Little Yosemite area will take about 1 hour (moderate ascent to ridgeline, then moderate descent to Alameda Creek).  The walk “back” (level along Alameda Creek) will take 1 hour or less.

Cost:                            $5.00 per car admission to the park. Or, join the East Bay Regional Parks Foundation, bring your membership card and your parking fee is waived.

Apres hike:                  If you are so inclined, bring a picnic lunch.
