Civic Thursday Meeting ( ZOOM ONLY ) - Gene Slater - The History of Racial Covenants in Residential Grant Deeds

Thursday, October 7th, 2021 - 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Gene Slater's book "Freedom to Discriminate" describes how, to defend all-white neighborhoods against the civil rights movement, realtors put the right to discriminate at the center of the concept of an individual's personal liberty. This far-reaching strategy reached its peak when voters adopted an amendment to the California Constitution prohibited fair housing laws. In the process they created the script of color-blind freedom that polarizes America on issue after issue today.

For over 40 years, Gene Slater has served as senior advisor on issues relating to fair housing and affordable housing. He is the founder of CSG Advisors, and the author of "Freedom To Discriminate: How Realtors Conspired To Segregate Housing and Divide America" (Heyday 2021).
